Re-grinding Guide for Solid Carbide Drills

Step-by-Step Re-grinding of Solid Carbide Drills

Pre-Regrinding Inspection

Inspect cutting edges for damage and wear. Remove large chipped edges using a silicon carbide grinding wheel.

1. Clearance Angle Grinding

Tool: Bowl-shaped diamond wheel (Ø100-200mm, grit 280-400)

  1. Grind primary clearance angle θ2 (refer to Figure 1). Repeat on opposite side with spark-out grinding. Maintain cutting edge height difference ≤0.02mm.
  2. DSW-specific: Without rotating drill, grind secondary clearance angle θ3 after θ2. Process both sides to form central ridge at drill axis. (See Table 1 for θ13 values)

2. Web Thinning

Tool: Straight diamond wheel (Ø100-200mm, grit 280-400)

  • Perform X-type web thinning according to standard procedure
  • Refer to Table 2 for β13 values

3. Edge Honing

Parameters: Honing angle (θ) and width (H) vary by drill type, diameter, and workpiece material (see specifications table).

Honing Procedure (Reference Figure 3):

  1. Rough-rounding of radius (R) area
  2. Coarse honing: Use electrodeposited diamond file (grit ~170)
  3. Fine honing: Use diamond stone (grit 400-600)
