Revolutionary Steel Drilling Performance
Kenna Metal has expanded its range of carbide drills by introducing the high-performance HPX drill for large-volume processing of steel materials. The HPX drill is designed for ISO-P steel materials and can quickly and efficiently drill holes with a maximum length-to-diameter ratio of 8 x D.
Compared to similar products, even in applications without lubrication or with minimal quantity lubrication (MQL), it can increase tool life by up to two times and productivity by up to three times for customers.
Engineering Innovations
Why is the HPX drill the best choice for steel processing applications? The key lies in its design. Steel is widely used in various automotive, commercial, and industrial applications, and due to the large application volume, the lifespan and processing capability of cutting tools are crucial.

Corner chamfer design prevents wear and chipping

Optimized edge preparation for steel applications
During the drilling process, steel generates strong mechanical loads, resulting in cutting forces that cause rapid tool wear and chipping at the vulnerable drill corners. Kenna Metal has added a small chamfer at the drill corners of the HPX drill and used straight cutting edges to prevent this failure. Additionally, the design incorporates rounded margin lands along the flute direction, which helps reduce friction and improve the drill's stability.
When drilling alloy steel, built-up edge is another common issue. The straight blade design of the HPX drill helps eliminate these defects, but the real key is the optimized edge preparation of the drill. This slight edge preparation and highly polished flutes further reduce the friction that causes built-up edge. Combined with the KCP15B carbide substrate specifically designed for steel and the proprietary multi-layer AlTiN coating, the HPX drill sets a new standard for tool life in large-volume ISO-P steel processing.
Enhanced Performance Features

Advanced chip breaking design for efficient evacuation
The special chip breaking design on the HPX drill improves chip formation and causes smaller chips to curl. The special materials and geometry of the HPX drill significantly reduce cutting forces, which is particularly useful for situations where the spindle capacity is weak, cutting conditions are unstable, or workpiece clamping is poor. The continuous cross-section makes the HPX drill less prone to breakage, and the ultra-high polished flutes ensure excellent chip evacuation performance.
For automotive manufacturers and other manufacturers who wish to turn off high-pressure coolant pumps to support dry machining or MQL systems, this is particularly important. For these workshops, efficient chip evacuation and low-friction cutting are essential, and the HPX drill excels in both areas. The drill is equipped with an MQL interface that complies with DIN 6535 and 69090-03 standards, without the need for special orders or internal modifications.
