The Application of Angle Heads in Engine Cylinder Block Machining - BIG DAISHOWA

Application of BIG Angle Head in Engine Block Machining

● Characteristics of Engine Block Machining

The engine block is the core component of an engine, and machining at every location is crucial. Among these, machining the starter motor mounting face is a key step in the engine block manufacturing process. Anomalies in the motor face machining may lead to abnormal equipment vibration and noise, and can ultimately affect the installation of the starter motor and the gear engagement effect between the engine flywheel and the starter. The quality of this machined surface directly impacts the overall performance and lifespan of the engine.

● Challenges in Engine Block Machining

The starter motor mounting face is a machined surface parallel to the rear end face, typically located on the backside of the rear flange. This surface is usually a semi-circular arc, which creates difficulties for machining.

● Machining Methods Comparison

Traditional Machining Method

Method: Using a horizontal machining center with a long boring bar equipped with a milling cutter head to mill the starter motor mounting face.

Advantages: Simple machining plan, relatively low tooling cost.

Disadvantages: Long boring bar, poor tool rigidity, low machining efficiency, unstable machining. This method cannot be used for large diesel engine blocks as in the following case.

BIG Machining Solution

Method: Using a horizontal machining center with a 90° angle head equipped with a milling cutter head to mill the starter motor mounting face.
