Application of SMART DAMPER Anti-Vibration Tool Holder in Deep Hole Machining

For deep hole machining and deep cavity milling, the tool overhang length must always be considered. As is well known, when the length-to-diameter ratio (overhang length to tool diameter) exceeds 4-5 times, chatter vibration may occur during machining. This is especially true when used on horizontal machining centers, where the tool holder's own weight adds to the challenge, making machining chatter more likely to occur. Therefore, effective anti-vibration countermeasures need to be considered.

Anti-Vibration Technology Principle

The BIG SMART Anti-Vibration Tool Holder has a built-in heavy damper. During machining, following the law of inertia, the movement phase of the damper cancels out the vibration phase transmitted from the tool tip, thereby achieving rapid vibration suppression.

Machining Example

Part Name: Template / Mold Plate
Material: QT600 (Ductile Iron)
Hole Specification: D95 hole, depth 480mm

Machining Requirements & Tooling Solution

Requirements:
  • Surface roughness within Ra 3.2
  • Interrupted hole fine boring completed in one operation
Equipment: Horizontal Machining Center (BT50 spindle)
Tooling Solution: BIG SMART Anti-Vibration Holder BBT50-CKB6-289 + CKB5-EWN68DP-240
(L/D Ratio: 8.2)

Cutting Parameters:

Depth of Cut: 0.15mm (per side)
Cutting Speed (Vc): 200 m/min
Feed Rate (f): 0.25 mm/rev

Machining Result:

After testing, the hole diameter dimensions and positional accuracy all met customer requirements. Surface roughness was around Ra 1.6, exceeding customer expectations.
