The SMART Anti-Vibration Tool Holder Series Best Suited for Deep Hole Boring (Part 2) - BIG DAISHOWA

Optimal SMART Anti-Vibration Tool Holder Series for Deep Hole Boring (Part 2)

SMART Anti-Vibration Integrated Type for Finishing

There are three types of anti-vibration products for boring: integrated boring head type, integrated shank type, and extension type. In addition to differences in application, their anti-vibration performance also varies.

Figure 1 shows the EWN fine boring head integrated type, where the anti-vibration mechanism is directly integrated inside the boring head. Consequently, the distance from the vibrating cutting edge to the anti-vibration mechanism is very short. Vibration generated at the cutting edge is transmitted to the anti-vibration mechanism over the shortest distance, allowing it to be rapidly attenuated.

Regarding the length-to-diameter ratio (L/D), depending on the rigidity of the machine tool and workpiece, it can reach a maximum of 7~8 times. Compared to the integrated shank type and extension type, the anti-vibration performance is superior, allowing an L/D ratio increase of 1~2 times under the same cutting conditions.

Key Features:

Utilizes BIG's mature precision adjustment mechanism for boring heads, combined with the SMART anti-vibration mechanism, enabling high-precision machining even for deep holes.
The entire SMART anti-vibration series features internal coolant capability, enabling coolant supply directly to the cutting edge even for very deep boring operations.

SMART Anti-Vibration Integrated Type for Roughing

The SW boring head for rough boring (Figure 2) also integrates the anti-vibration mechanism within the boring head, providing high anti-vibration capability similar to the finishing anti-vibration boring head.

Performance Characteristics:

Being a 2-insert design, the cutting edges and hole wall form a supportive state, allowing an L/D ratio of up to 8~9 times.
Even with long overhangs, there is no need to reduce the depth of cut or feed rate; only adjusting the cutting speed is sufficient to achieve normal machining results.

Integrated Shank Type and Extension Type

Figure 3 shows the integrated shank type, where the anti-vibration mechanism is built into the front-end interface section.

Important Note:

If an extension or reduction sleeve is attached to the front end, the distance from the cutting edge to the anti-vibration mechanism increases, preventing the anti-vibration effect from being fully realized. Therefore, in principle, the use of extensions or reduction sleeves is not recommended.
The same principle applies to the extension type.
However, its advantage is the ability to use both roughing and finishing boring heads (without anti-vibration mechanisms) interchangeably.

Large Diameter Boring Machining

For boring diameters of ⌀200mm and above, there is a dedicated boring tool system for large diameters, where boring heads and counterweights are mounted on a yoke-shaped frame.

Design Innovation:

With this structure, the distance from the cutting edge to the anti-vibration mechanism is relatively far, which would significantly reduce anti-vibration performance.
Therefore, in the anti-vibration boring tool for large diameters, the anti-vibration mechanism is placed inside the base frame, adopting a structure much closer to the cutting edge.
As a result, even in boring operations above ⌀200mm, subtle vibrations can be transmitted to the anti-vibration mechanism over the shortest distance.

Boring Bars for Lathes

The SMART Anti-Vibration Boring Bar for lathes (Figure 5) adopts a structure where two "high-density dampers" are inserted from the rear, bringing the cutting edge closer to the anti-vibration mechanism.

Anti-Vibration Performance

Its anti-vibration capability is the same as the products described earlier, with a maximum L/D ratio reaching 8~9 times.

Clamping Design

A flat surface for side-lock clamping is designed, allowing it to be clamped like a standard boring bar, eliminating the need for a dedicated holder.

Versatility & Updates

A rich selection of insert seats is available to handle various machining tasks. Furthermore, HSK and Capto types for multi-tasking machines were added last year.
