As one of the core components of an automotive chassis system, the wheel hub assembly is often referred to as the “joint of the car.” Whether in traditional internal combustion engine vehicles or new energy vehicles, the wheel hub assembly plays a critical role in connecting the wheels to the suspension system. It transmits the vehicle’s torque and braking force while withstanding various complex loads during operation, serving as the foundation for ensuring safe, stable, and efficient vehicle performance.
A wheel hub assembly typically consists of key components such as the hub flange, inner ring, outer ring, rolling elements (balls or rollers), seals, and sensors. Among these, the hub flange—as the main structural component of the hub assembly—plays a critical role in connecting the wheel, transmitting loads, and ensuring installation accuracy. Its structural precision and surface quality directly determine the wheel’s positioning accuracy, operational smoothness, and the vehicle’s overall driving safety, placing high demands on cutting tools.
Face turning of hub assemblies involves intermittent machining, which places high demands on the chip-breaking resistance of the cutting inserts; precision turning requires high surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Additionally, during the tapping process, the workpiece material is highly ductile, causing chips to easily become compressed and adhere to the tool, which can lead to defects such as burrs and collapsed thread peaks.

Solution Introduction

Product Introduction
New Generation of Steel Car Negative-Type P Series Products
The newly launched P-Series steel turning inserts are widely used in the machining of automotive components such as wheel hub assemblies. The three groove types—PF, PM, and PR—precisely cover the full range of machining conditions for wheel hub assemblies, from finish turning to rough turning. When paired with the new GPT62 series grades featuring a two-tone coating, these inserts effectively meet the stringent requirements for insert life and stability in wheel hub assembly machining, helping to achieve efficient and reliable machining performance. They feature the following design characteristics:

GPT62 series :achieve dual improvement in both wear resistance and toughness

-
Wear-Resistant—GPT6220
High-speed continuous/light intermittent cutting | Carbon steel, alloy steel: finish → semi-finish machining
High-hardness, wear-resistant, dense CVD coating, matched to a high-strength cemented carbide substrate -
General-Purpose——GPT6230
Continuous + general intermittent cutting | Carbon steel, alloy steel: finish → rough machining
Tightly bonded, fine-grained CVD coating, paired with a toughness-enhanced cemented carbide substrate -
Intermittent-Duty——GPT6230
Heavy intermittent/heavy-duty conditions | Carbon steel, alloy steel: semi-finishing → roughing
Twin-reinforced, fine-grained, tough CVD coating, paired with an ultra-tough cemented carbide substrate

Series of Taps Specifically Designed for Wheel Hubs
Primarily used for threading automotive components such as wheel hub assemblies, these tools are widely employed in the tapping process for quenched and tempered steel parts—such as 55C and 65Mn (with a hardness of approximately HRC 30). Available in sizes M6, M10, M12, and M14, they are specifically designed to address the challenges of chip evacuation and wear resistance when machining high-toughness steel parts, ensuring thread quality while extending tool life.
