Let You Learn More About Carbide Drill Bits

How much do you know about these 3 different types of carbide drill bits?

Precision-engineered tools for superior machining performance

Carbide drill bits are made from a complete cemented carbide rod and are precisely ground using a 5-axis fully automatic CNC machining center. These tools have a wide range of applications, high toughness, exceptional hardness, fast cutting speed, excellent wear resistance, and superior red hardness. They are suitable for the production and processing of parts made from various materials.

Characteristics of different types of carbide drill bits

1. Solid carbide drill bit

  •      Has centering function, comprehensive varieties
  •      Suitable for deep hole processing, high processing accuracy
  •      Can be reground and reused, effectively reducing processing costs

2. Carbide replaceable blade drill bit

  •      Disposable blades, low cost, easy to change
  •      Usually 2D-6D specifications, no centering function
  •      Rich variety of blades, wide applicable range
  •      Relatively low processing accuracy

3. Replaceable head carbide drill bit

  •      Has centering function, complete varieties
  •      The same drill rod can install multiple diameters of drill heads
  •      High processing efficiency, high processing accuracy
  •      Multiple materials of drill heads can correspond to different materials
  •      The drill head can be reground to further reduce costs

Application scenarios for different types of carbide drill bits

Solid carbide drill bit

Flat holes, laminated holes

U-drill (replaceable blade type)

Flat holes, inclined holes, semi-circular holes, overlapping holes, concave holes, with pre-drilled holes

Magic drill bit (replaceable head type)

Flat holes, laminated holes

Analysis of advantages and disadvantages of commonly used high-precision drill bits

In high-speed, high-precision drilling, many users choose solid cemented carbide drill bits or replaceable head cemented carbide drill bits. Both types of drill bits have self-centering functions, high drilling efficiency, and high drilling accuracy, generally reaching IT6-IT9 levels. For the same length-to-diameter ratio, the rigidity of solid cemented carbide drill bits is slightly better.

However, considering that the cost of solid cemented carbide drill bits is relatively high, to allow multiple regrindings, longer solid cemented carbide drill bits are actually used, which inadvertently weakens the rigidity. On the other hand, replaceable head cemented carbide drill bits can use the most suitable length of drill rod, maximizing rigidity, and due to the convenience of operation and the much lower unit price of the drill head compared to solid cemented carbide drill bits, more and more users prefer this type of replaceable head cemented carbide drill bit.

Comparison Summary

Feature Solid Carbide Replaceable Blade Replaceable Head
Centering Function Yes No Yes
Processing Accuracy High Low High
Cost Efficiency Medium (regrindable) High (disposable blades) High (regrindable heads)
Rigidity High (but reduced by length) Medium High (optimized length)
Best Application Deep hole drilling Various hole types High-precision drilling
